Marlins keep at it, and earn many supporters

Marlins make progress:

Marlins were up against tough opposition: KCS old boys, Old Rutlishians, Old Tiffinians and London Media, though held their nerve and kept their cool to the end. They displayed moments of brilliance, especially against Old Rutlishians, where they were unlucky to score on more than one occasion. Del Boy skipped through a few tackles, though the rear guard was slow to arrive in support. Del Boy and Rees- the new utility forward did have a few runs at the line, but were thwarted by some good defensive display by a youthful Old Tiffinian and Rutlishian side. Last year’s player of the season, Dan Wright, stepped up to play scum half, for the missing Will Walters, and was a nuisance to the opposition, thwarting several well drilled moves, and to everyone’s surprise, only managed a single penalty. Veteran Dave Mole, in search of a six pack before his hols in sunnier climes, did set up several rolling mauls, though again the lack of support, did slow down the momentum. Tom Browne made some amends for his 2017/ 18 Rambo- missing in action” trophy, through cajoling the troops. Fly half Tom Parker, played a pivotal role in the games, and distributed the ball well, linking the forwards and backs well, and with strategic kicking, he was able to release Rees and Del Boy into space. Shane Martin, at centre, was a formidable force in defence, making quite a few try saving tackles and utilized possession well, to distribute ball out wide and use the width of the pitch. Lock; Foxy, returning to Rugby after a spell in Trump land, competed at the line outs, and rucks, throwing his weight behind the ambling forwards. Rodriguez, on the wing tackled well, and linked with the forwards, though again the poor support play let the side down. Spanish exile, Antonio; did well to get through his first game of rugby, and as tight-head, though had some scars, from being on the wrong side of the ruck. All in all, a few new finds to develop through the season, an achievable ask, given the mix of youth and veterans in the Marlin squad.

Marlins kick off their league season next week against Old Mids. In Super-Man’s famous last words: Onwards and upwards.
