Still looking for improvement over the next few weeks

A blustery day and a damp pitch was never going to result in a great performance. The first 25 minutes were laboured and lacked fluidity as PJF tried to get on top of the conditions and an obstinate Economicals side that was never going to capitulate easily. Within the first 20 minutes PJF had suffered the loss of the influential Luke Couchman with a knee injury. On the 25 minute mark Brad Bosman broke free and made a great break carrying the ball to just outside of the Economicals 22m before kicking through. From the line out PJF managed to capitalise on some lose play to go over for the first try. Seaghan Davey slotting the extra two points. Form the restart PJF continued to press but could not convert the pressure into points until Dan Wilkinson came into the line to create an overlap and a final deft pass put Chase Thompson over in the corner. The kick was missed and the half came to an end with PJF 12 points to the good.

The second half started in much the same way as the first half with Economicals offering a stiff defence and most of the play was concentrated around the sticky middle area of the pitch. It needed a break from Iain Greenwood and a supporting run form Jack Kennedy who finished the move off by diving over for the try. In the blustery conditions the kick was missed. Economicals from the restart created some pressure of their own that lead to a penalty close to the PJF line for collapsing the maul. From the tap penalty after a couple of pick and goes Economicals got the ball over the line close to the posts, the try was converted. PJF returned to the attack and after a couple of sallies into the Economicals 22m that came close to extending the PJF lead, Joe Dwyer went over for a try. The conversion failed to be added. Economicals restarted and PJF were once again made to defend their line, having repelled a number of attacks a nice move from Economicals they went in under the posts. The conversion added the extra points. With Economicals heads up PJF had to steady the ship. It was only after Economicals broke the PJF line off an intercepted pass and only a last ditch tackle stopped an almost certain third try. After this clos call PJF worked their way back up the pitch and scored their fifth try of the game to close it out 27 - 14.

PJF had got the win, it wasn't as convincing as everyone might have wanted and a number of injuries were picked up during the game, but sometimes grinding out the results is necessary. Next up, Bec Old Boys away. The lads will appreciate your support. The game will be played on their small sloping pitch and we can be sure that Bec will be a different proposition at home to the side that travelled to the Pightle earlier in the season, so PJF cannot afford to be complacent.
