PJF go into Christmas on top of the league

Just before kick off the weather worsened. The heavens opened and a heavy drizzle that would last all game rained on a good crowd that had gathered to enjoy a game of open running rugby after enjoying a good lunch. The game kicked off and PJF were soon on the scoreboard. From the restart PJF went back onto the attack and with only 10 minutes gone were two scores up. The pressure was relentless and Streatham were really struggling to hold a line and it wasn't very long before their line was broken again and PJF were three scores up. After just over 20 minutes the bonus point was in the bag. Still the rain fell. PJF then relaxed and took their foot off the pedals a conceded two weak tries themselves. Streatham, revived by their sudden change in fortunes continued to press and PJF were struggling. It was just before half time that PJF managed to shake themselves from their malaise and put together a neat move that saw half time arrive with PJF leading by 29-14.

The second half continued in the same vein as the latter parts of the first half with PJF making mistakes and looking somewhat disjointed. Within 10 minutes of the second half Streatham scored again to close the scores to 10 points. Driving hard and using their forwards to good effect Streatham continued to press sensing a possible upset. Against the rum of play PJF scored under the posts to move out to 36-19. But Streatham now had their heads up and returned to the attack and saw their pressure rewarded with another try, closing the gap again to 12 points. With the rain still falling Streatham continued to pressure the PJF line coming close on a number of occasions but PJF withstood the pressure. With five minutes remaining PJF seemed to say 'enough' and broke out of their 22m to go over with a final try to make the final score 41-24.

PJFs performance was a bit like the day, dreary with a few bright spells. PJF now have a break until after Christmas. When the league resumes on January 12th with a home game against league contenders Kingston who narrowly lost to Cranleigh. It should be a cracker if PJF can discover the form that carried the side up to the end of November. Kingston will be looking for revenge for the narrowest defeat to PJF at Hook back in October.

The Club would like to record a big thank you to Bryan Whicher for preparing lunch and Siobhan and the girls for running the bar and serving table on Saturday. The Club would also like to wish all officials, members and supporters a very happy and peaceful Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all back at the Pightle on Saturday, January 12th.
