Firstly, we were treated to a tremendous game this afternoon and all players should feel very proud of their contribution in what was always going to be a tough fixture.
PJF came out of the blocks with real intent and determination against an unbeaten Teddington side who proved to be well organised and matched PJF's physicality. Hard driving runs from the forwards and strong running from the backs battered the Teddington lines but Teddington's defence held firm. In the set piece PJF exerted their dominance and Teddington struggled to get any quality ball. When they did get possession PJF put Teddington under pressure and kept them pinned in their own half. The first ten minutes saw the game payed at a frenetic pace. The game then settled into a pattern whre PJF were firmly in control. The pressure and the set piece dominance of PJF saw Teddington concede a number of penalties which made it very hard for them to develop any continuity. Their well organised defence saw PJF kept out despite coming close on a number of occasions. With the first half was around 20minutes old PJF coming off dominant forward play saw Jack Kennedy break blind and laid the ball off to Chase Thompson who strode the remaining 5 metres before dotting down in the corner for the first try of the game. The kick was difficult and was missed. From the restart PJF continued to drive Teddington back and after a number of conceded penalties the referee issued thge first yellow card of the game to Teddington. PJF opted for the scrum and drove towards the Teddington line only for the scrum to be dragged down by Teddington. The referee considered the penalty try but decided that a try was not going to be the definite result of the scrum and awarded PJF another penalty. From the resulting scrum Jack Kennedy broke blind and laid the ball off to Chase again who dabbed down in the corner for his second. The kick was missed again.
The half came to a close with PJF holding a 10-0 lead. The second half saw PJF continue to exert the pressure and Teddington continue to fiecely defend their line. A number of penalties were won in the Teddington 22m but PJF could not use these opportunities to keep the score board ticking over. During this period Teddington picked up a second yellow card. But agan PJF could not penetrate the Teddington defence. With around 15 minutes remaining on the clock Teddington finally started to exert some pressure of their own and they won a penalty in front on the PJF posts. The points were kicked. Five minutes later a line out in the PJF 22m saw the ball threown over the top and found the Teddington flanker who was able to canter in for a try close to the PJF posts. The additional points were added to square the game. PJF had lost control of the game and a passage of play saw PJF collect a yellow card of their own. Teddington now saw an opportunity to win ther game and pushed on with their advantage and with minutes left on the clock they won another kickable penalty just outside of the PJF 22m.The penalty was kicked and PJF's hearts were broken. PJF had controlled the game for 60 minuts but could not keep the score board ticking over and that cost PJF dear. PJF need to pick themselves up and press on to next week where they travel to Barnes to take on London Exiles.
The team, when reflecting on the game, can be proud that this was their best performance of the season and they must now refocus and get back to winning ways. The consolation being a losing bonus point, which means PJF did not come away totally empty handed.
