The side for Saturday was much changed from the usual line up as many 1st team players were away. Matters became even more compicated just before kick off when George Goldspink was ruled out with a hamstring injury. So a patched up much shanged side took to the filed. However fte smiled on PJF in the first minutes of the game when Finlay Hawes intercepted a pass and ran in close to the Law Society posts. Joe Rendell added the extra points. Law Society, playing with the slope then started to exert some pressure but PJF's defence held firm. After about 20 minutes after a series of pick an go's Law Society did eventually manage to squeeze over the line wide out. The kick was missed. PJF were gainig a fair share of the possession but couldn't break out of their half. Eventually, a missed tackle at the beginning of a passage of play saw Law Society get in for their second. This time they were successful with the extras. Law created other chances with one being foiled by a fine tackle on the line. From a scrum 'Jack' Kennedy managed to break free on the edge of the PJF 22m and almost ran in, but Jack was caught 10m out and although his head was almost taken off by the desperate tackle, the referee adjudged it OK and Jack was knocked into touch. Law Society managed to take the resulting line out and worked their way back down the park, eventually going over over on the left hand side. The half came to an end with PJF 12 points adrift.
Coach Rhodri made some changes at half time, taking off some of the second team debutants and replacing them with others. The experience the debutants had gained made them aware of the level they need to bridge going forward, but that was a positive. They needed to understand the intensity and pace of the game when they step up. They had been asked to give everything they had for 40 minutes and they had.
Playing with the slight slope and the experienced Tom White coming on in the front row it was hoped that things could improve. However, early in the half a couple of decisions went against PJF culminating in a penaty to Law Society. From the kick to touch the line out was stopped in its tracks but from a series of pick and go's, Law Society forced themselves over. The try was converted, giving the opposition a commanding 24-7 lead.
PJF could have capitulated but they didn't, and with the more solid scrum PJF started to exert some serious pressure which culminated in Chase Thompson going over close to the posts. Chase was one of the senior players who really stepped up on the day, carrying an injury from the first half Chase stayed on and gained his reward with an excellent try. Joe Rendell added the extra points to narrow the score to ten points. PJF continued with their attacks, the scrum with Tom White at loose head started to drive Law Society back adding to the pressure on their half backs. From a scrummage PJF created an opening and went over wide out on the left. Joe saw his kick skid narrowly across the fromnt of the posts. The game standing at 24-19, PJF looked for a way to snatch victory. The lads came close with Law Society scrambling desperately to keep us out. A penalty on time gave PJF a final chace to take the game. They progressed down the field and gained another penalty on the Law Society 22m. Again PJF came close but the final act of the game saw Law Society kicking the ball dead.
Although PJF were obviously disappointed by the result, Iain Greenwood summed up the display by saying that 'if we were going to loose we should do so having left everything on the pitch,' and on this occasion they certainly had. The reward, a losing bonus point, so PJF didn't go home totally empty handed. Six second team player had stepped into the breach and had given their all. They now understand what they have to do to step up on a regular basis, which has got to be a positive.
