I am sorry to have to report that my brother Dr
David “ Wink” Tidy passed away this morning.
Always known as Wink he was fortunate to have been born with all the family brains.
Eleven plus from the village school to Purley Grammar School where he gained lots of O & A levels and a place at Durham University. Played in the school 1st XV as scrum half.
Did 2 years in the RAF for National Service and then took his place at Durham where he read chemistry.
After a year in halls he lived for the next five years in a pub in the city working behind the bar to pay his way through college. During this period he played rugby for Durham City.
After he had got his PHD he left Durham to do research in high temperature chemistry at the CEGB. After some years the government saw fit to do away with research which enabled him to retire at an early age.
On his return to the club from Durham he became club secretary and for some seasons 1st XV Scrum Half.
He was the only person that I ever met who dropped himself saying there was a better scrum half than himself playing in the club. The only member of the Tidy family who knew when it was time to retire.
On the home front Wink managed two wives and four children, 3 daughters and one son who sadly died in infancy.
He will be missed.
May he rest in peace.
