And so the 2010 leg of this season started on a cold, windswept, exposed playing field high up in the Surrey Veldt at the “Mighty Warl”. Purley John Fisher, on paper, were the underdogs - fortunately they were playing on grass and they evened the loca

The end to this pulsating game could not have been better scripted as PJF drew their second wind and attacked deep into their host's territory. A transgression at the breakdown gave PJF the opportunity to move the 18-17 score line into their favour as the clock ticked away. The ball floated over the posts for 3 points to give PJF the lead, at this point the home side's supporters all wished for an Alex Ferguson watch as they saw the remaining time ebb away.

The match had all the hallmarks of the big local derby, typical of the many matches between these 2 sides over the years, their legacy continuing to serve the Croydon rugby fraternity well. A bright start by the home side had PJF working hard to defend their line. The team quickly rolled up their sleeves and dug in hard to create a base from which to counter attack with venom.

PJF's front five provided said base with solid phase one scrummaging and good loose support. Mention here to young Munch who tamed his opponent well allowing the roller blading Thelwell to finish the job. Sam Knight’s return to the back row worked on several levels, not only his individual ability but also the back row cohesion that at times has been missing. Such play saw the home side’s game plan thwarted on several occasions. As and when the situation allowed, PJF’s backs were cohesive and in sync attacking with purpose and flair.

Warlingham’s dominance in the early exchanges was rewarded with two penalties as they settled quicker of the two sides. TO PJF’s credit they did well to keep the score here and on occasions had the opponents on the back foot, benefitting from penalties that allowed them to clear their lines and gain the crucial territory required. Against the run of play PJF notched a converted try as Lol touched down, rounding off a smart three quarter line attack. This took PJF into the half time break 6-7 ahead.

Given the opportunity to showboat their talents in front of SRFU dignitaries the PJF side ignored the two tries scored by their hosts early in the second half. They fought back with courage and a unity to score another try from close play, continued re-cycling and quick hands. Add to this was another well struck penalty and the stage was set for the close finish that ensued.

The large, predominantly home crowd were silenced and witnessed a good PJF team effort in taming another side higher up in the London 2 SE league. With this under the belt, as well as the Deal & Betts result, PJF look to take something from the season to reward their continued hard work.

And so for the second season in a row, the score remains even between these 2 local rivals, evidencing to Warl what is needed and PJF showing what it takes to remain at this level.
