But Economicals put up a spirited fight

Saturday saw perfect playing conditions for PJF, sun shining and a dry pitch. The match started in usual manner with PJF’s hooker crossing the line in the opening minute following a turnover from the opening kickoff. The conversion was missed. PJF would struggle with kicks all day as they were without any of their natural kickers.

Repetitive penalties on the PJF line saw the PJF prop sent to the sin bin on the 5th minute of the game. Whilst the prop was off the field PJF conceded a converted try to give Economicals the lead.

In defending their line PJF showed a great enterprising spirit and it is testament to their will to attack from anywhere that saw PJF’s winger was soon crossing the Economicals’ white wash following nice interplay between PJF’s 10 and centre.

Yellow card back on and suddenly the flood gates opened for PJF, nice play on the right saw the fly half put in a lovely chip over the top and angled back in field, PJF’s winger beat the opposition to go over for a second try. PJF’s fly half working more of his magic created space for the other players around him and that allowed PJFs’s wing to cross for his hat trick and bag yet another try bonus point before half time.

Economicals fought back and scored a consolation try to close out the half. What was clear was that PJF had their groove but the penalty count was giving life and energy to the Economicals’ efforts.

Half time saw a brief refocusing of efforts and again Fisher opened with a bang with first PJF’s flanker and then the scrum half crossing the line in the opening minutes. But against the run of play Economicals were allowed to break out of the grip PJF had on the game and score their own try. The response was further tries by the fly half, and then the scrum half darted in for his second of the game.

Economicals were becoming frustrated, and there followed a couple of episodes of pushing and shoving with the home side lucky not to have one of their own sent to the bin. These incidents put PJF off their stride and allowed the opposition to regroup and come back at PJF who conceded three tries in quick succession. With Economicals threatening one of the greatest come backs of all time PJF settled back into their stride and PJF missed several try scoring opportunities in the final ten minutes to really put the result beyond reach before the final whistle called time on the afternoon’s proceedings.

The final score Economicals 36 vs PJF 46 was closer than perhaps it should have been.
But, despite coming off the boil, PJF bagged the bonus point for scoring 4 plus tries and maintained their 100% record for the season. Next week PJF entertain Bec OBs at the Pightle we look forward to seeing a good turn out to support the lads.
