Late flurry sees PJF home in style

On a day that was cloudy but dry at 10.00 the late morning snow created some minor problems with Bryan and Pat working hard to clear the lines just before kick off. But with Wellingtonians raring to go and the referee happy just to avoid an afternoon's shopping the game was on. It started at a pace which was set by Wellingtonians who went over in the corner after a rolling maul. PJF clawed back three points with a penalty converted by Dan Wilkinson. In a game where the handling was far better than the weather deserved PJF spread the ball wide and stretched the Wellingtonians' defence this unexpected tactic paid off when Jon Osborne ran over to touch down near the posts. The conversion was kicked by Dan. Five minutes later a handling error by Wellingtonians on the half way line saw PJF capitalise on the error with Ubi going over in the corner after gathering the fumbled ball. Dan Wilkinson, who was kicking really well both tactically and from the tee, slotted the extra points.
The ten minutes before half time saw Wellingtonians exerting a period of sustained pressure which resulted in George Perry being shown a yellow card for straying off side close to the line. PJF who defended well against a driving maul from the line out managed to eventually clear their lines only to concede a silly penalty on their 10m line which allowed Wellingtonians put the ball back deep in the PJF 22m. After defending another line out PJF packed down for a 5m scrum and with their put in PJF expected it to be a formality to clear their line again, but a man down and with the Wellingtonians' pack driving well to take the ball against the head things fell apart and Wellingtonians crashed over for a try which was converted. This was the last action of the half and the two sides changed around with the score at 17 - 12 to PJF.
The second half saw much of the early action taking place in the PJF half with a number of penalties being conceded by PJF and then compounded by back chat that was only going to end one way, Wellingtonians gaining another 10m! The self imposed pressure eventually told and about 25 minutes into the second half the visitors went over in the corner. The conversion missed, the scores were all square.
With 10 minutes to go and the game looking as though it might slip away from PJF the ball found its way out wide and a great break form the PJF backs culminating in a slick piece of inter-passing saw the action sweep across the pitch for PJF to cross the line for a wonderful try which was duly converted by Dan. But PJF weren't finished yet and in the remaining minutes the backs cut loose to score two further tries both of which were converted.
The final score 38 - 17 was a great win with PJF picking up a much needed bonus point. With Georgians also winning well PJF still find themselves at the foot of the table. Next week's fixture against Law Society being a real eight pointer. There are areas of improvement to be made with set pieces being an area where small improvements could lead to dividends with PJF finding space on the wings. The backs played with a fluidity that has been missing in many of the games this season. The tactical kicking also showed a marked improvement during this game with Dan Wilkinson finding the space behind the visitors back three. Jon Osborne was instrumental in getting the ball out wide allowing the wings to capitalise on their pace. The big question is can the side continue to develop. With results being an exact mirror image to the results in the first half of the season PJF hope to break that pattern having beaten Law Society in the home leg back in October.
