The game was preceded by a minutes silence in tribute to Harry Flowers a past president and player with Purley RFC and Mike Spicer of O Whitgiftians who passed away after a battle against illness. The game itself started at a cracking pace in nice conditions. PJFs pack establishing early dominance in the set scrums. Much of the first half was played in Whitgiftian territory. PJF closed down on any Whitgiftian possession very quickly. With Whitgiftians having to play most of the game on the back foot only PJF handling errors kept the score at 0 - 0. As the first half progressed the weather closed in and compounded the handling problems and it wasn't until the half an hour mark that PJF finally broke the resolute Whitgiftian defence with Ubaka Onyekwelu crossing in the corner to put the home side 5 - 0 up. The difficult conversion narrowly missed from Dan Wilkinson.
The second half continued as the first half had finished. The game had pace, opportunities and excitement and PJF had to weather a period of Whitgiftian pressure before re establishing their control over the game and after a fine piece of running rugby debutant Jon Osborne touched down close to the posts and Dan Wilkinson added the extra points. The match continued at a rate with only errors in the difficult weather preventing either side adding to the score board. PJF finally closed the game out with Ubaka Onyekwelu breaking the Whitgiftian line and running in from the Whits 10m line, the last 20m with an OW held at arms length. From the kick off PJFs scrum half broke free only to be denied a bonus point score by a tackle just inside the Whits 22m.
The game ended with PJF winning 17 - 0.
A much improved performance over the previous week. PJF now have to maintain the performance level and strive to take the next step.
Next week PJF entertain free scoring, top of the table O Amplefordians, this should be another good test for the club to measure their progress made this season.
