Purley John Fisher underlined their pedigree in the Annual Combined London Old Boys Tournament this weekend by winning it for a second consecutive season. In the 9 years that the club has been formed we have won it 3 times and been losing finalists twice.

A rusty start saw us loose narrowly to KCS Old Boys 10-12. Had the official been stronger in refereeing the scrummage the outcome would have been different. Characteristically PJF’s points came from well executed line out take and drives. The new wing forward, John Clayton, set his stall out for this season by scoring on both occasions.

After a break and some time to focus, PJF met Paulines. A much improved performance saw them eclipse their opponents by 27-0. Ruairi Campbell-Carson slotted 2 tries and freed his centre partner Foxy, another new face, for his debut score. Hooker Krish benefited from a clean line out take and drive, as the new youngster opened his try account at the Club.

The next match saw PJF pitted against Amplefordians. Not to be outdone by the number of new faces on show, two of the older boys took up the challenge. First Joe Dilieto and then Alan Sillitto (FUF), crossed the whitewash from close range following good drives by the pack. Ruairi nailed his third try and John C rounded the scoring off as after 5 minutes of the second half had been played, the opponents waved the white flag. 24-0 after 15 minutes of rugby was a sound result.

The last match was a do or die affair against Cobham, victors over KCS, with points difference all important. To cap earlier good displays, new winger/fullback Naz floated around the defence to score a blistering try. Nick Owen thundered across from about 30 yards out and Scotty hung on as the scrum drove across from 15 yards out.

The squad improved as the day wore on and mixed the play well between solid forward grunt and grind and penetrating back moves.
