Purley John Fisher were glad when the final whistle went on Saturday as it not only ended the game but also a long hard and frustrating season. The year was spent building a new side with young players taking over from much more experienced campaigners wh

Full credit must go to Captain John Cox and Coach Spencer Casey for cajoling their squad during the year, week in and week out, enabling them to complete a punishing London 3 SE League programme. Despite this loss, the withdrawal of Lordswood and the RFU's league restructuring it is unlikely that PJF will suffer any relegation issues this season.

PJF belied the league positions of these two sides on Saturday as they took the initiative through a try by James Leigh under the posts allowing Charlie Fisher to slot the conversion. Thereafter PJF yielded 2 scrums against the head which saw the ball spun quickly to the home side's left wing on both occasions which he accepted and outpaced the cover to score. A period of hard graft by the visitors saw Fisher notch a penalty to keep them in touch with their hosts. Unfortunately PJF's creaking scrum let Hove's No.8 pick up and feed his support for them to score another try.

PJF were unable to secure any possession or territorial advantage and were soon chasing shadows as the oppositions backs started to run aggressively at them. A penalty and converted try took the score at half time to 29-10 in favour of the home side.

From the kick off the hard yards were earned by PJF through the tireless Leigh and David Sia. Quick hands from inside their own 22 freed winger Nick Murphy on half way; the young winger backed himself and outpaced the defence to score and move PJF on to 15 points. Hove's response was punishing as they moved the ball with great interplay between backs and forwards resulting in their substitute centre crossing the whitewash to score a try which was converted. PJF then silenced the crowd with 2 blistering tries following good phases of play that saw the ball recycled and moved up the paddock. Firstly winger Tom Casey finished clinically in the corner at the end of a free flowing move. This was soon followed by scrum half Ollie Davies' dogged play in the loose to ground the ball from amongst a melee of forwards.

So at 34-25 PJF had the momentum and were starting to exert some control on the game. This was thwarted when lock Neil Leather was sin binned for killing the ball at a ruck - Hove took advantage of this by converting the ensuing penalty and using their extra man to score 2 further converted tries.

In all PJF played nervously, hesitantly and vaguely in parts and then sublimely in others. The problem was that the ratio was in favour of the downside and at these moments PJF were punished by a good, effective well drilled host side.
