Ouch!! PJF were second best in this Surrey Cup Semi Final at the weekend, as Richmond marched through to meet the other finalists, Guilford. Despite the score line the PJF players played with heart and never gave up hope of salvaging something more deserv

Having got this far was a tremendous achievement for PJF as they locked horns with one of the biggest Clubs in the South East region. The Club can hold their head high as a result of this season’s campaign and feel proud of the players and coaching staff involved. A sentiment echoed by the resolute few who supported on the day.

Richmond showed why they were 2 leagues above PJF as their drill and cohesion kept the score board ticking over steadily as the game unfolded. PJF’s pack took the game to the hosts, but although they held their end up, was unable to control this phase as much as they are used to. Mike Lorraine was deservedly given PJF’s Man of the Match for his solid lineout play and willingness to carry out the hard graft in the loose play.

PJF’s points came from a line out take and drive in which they trundled their opponents back 15 metres. Ollie Booth rounded the move off by scoring the try. Charlie Fisher was unlucky with a couple of attempts at goal that went close but unrewarded. Vaughan and Carson ran and tackled hard but were unable to find the space they needed to capitalise.

PJF’s best period of the game came in the last 10 minutes as they encamped on Richmond ’s 22 metre line. After several deliberate fouls, the official finally had the courage of his convictions and sin binned the opponent’s second row. This however was too little too late for PJF as they ran out of time.

It’s not that PJF played badly, but they found it hard to live with a side that benefit from superior sponsorship and the ability to train at least 4 times a week together. It is hoped that by realising that they could have got closer, the side will look to build upon this experience and channel their frustrations into the remaining league fixtures.

PJF’s League programme resumes next week as they visit Gravesend .
